Methylene blue (tetramethylthionine chloride) was first produced synthetically in 1876 by the German chemist Heinrich Caro. It is a very strong dye that was first used for dyeing cotton. Shortly after its discovery, it became apparent that the substance not only dyes textiles, but also selectively enriches and stains biological structures – in particular cell components, nerve cells and bacteria. This marked the beginning of methylene blue’s career in histology and microscopy, where it is still used today as a contrast agent.
Even before antibiotics or modern antiviral therapies were developed, methylene blue was used in medicine – for the treatment of malaria, among other things. In fact, it was one of the first synthetic drugs in modern pharmaceutical history.
